Peter Gilgan
Peter Gilgan is the Chairman & CEO of Mattamy Asset Management, a firm he founded in 2018 to build and hold a diversified portfolio of investments and businesses across geographies, asset classes and the spectrum of risk and return. Mattamy Asset Management is the parent company of Mattamy Homes, which Peter founded in 1978 and then grew into the largest privately owned homebuilder in North America, with operations across Canada and the US.

Donates $1 million to Hurricane Ian relief
Mattamy donates $1 million to support Florida communities affected by Hurricane Ian. Through the company’s internal matching program, employees also fundraised an additional $114,000 which was contributed to the American Red Cross and Florida Disaster Fund.
Downtown Wellen opens
The highly anticipated downtown core of Wellen Park opens, including its expansive outdoor recreation areas and hand-selected retailers. Located along the 80-acre Grand Lake, the fully leased Downtown Wellen ushers in an exciting new chapter, offering outdoor recreation, dining, entertainment and shopping, as well as a calendar packed with events and activities.
Welcome home
Mattamy Homes, named after our founder Peter Gilgan’s two eldest children – Matt and Amy – is born. Peter builds the first ever Mattamy home in Burlington, Ontario, where the owners lived happily for the next 30 years.
First multi-lot purchase
Mattamy makes its first multi-lot purchase in a single community with the purchase of 20 lots in Burlington, Ontario. This kickstarts Mattamy’s growth and scale as a production homebuilder.
First multi-phased community
Mattamy begins construction on the Glen Abbey community, Mattamy’s first multi-phased community, located in Oakville, Ontario.
Introduces the WideLot™
Mattamy challenges the traditional building norms and introduces WideLot™ homes, resulting in a wider, more welcoming street profile. This innovative approach changed the development industry forever. As a result of WideLot™, there are fewer homes on each street, meaning less traffic and a more pedestrian-friendly feel. The first WideLot™ homes were built in The Orchard community in Burlington, Ontario.
Expands to the United States
Mattamy begins to expand into the United States developing in both Minneapolis, Minnesota and Jacksonville, Florida. In the first year, the two divisions closed more than 400 homes. Since then, Mattamy has grown in the United States with communities in Charlotte (2005), Phoenix (2006), Orlando (2009), Tampa-Sarasota (2013), Tucson (2014), Naples (2016), Raleigh (2017), Southeast Florida (2017) and Dallas (2020). Expansion into new markets across the United States continues today.
First factory-built homes
Mattamy explores building full-sized homes from start to almost-finish on an assembly line. With nearly 30 models to choose from, the assembly line homes included roofing, tiling, hardwood, cabinetry, light fixtures and paint. After the home was “delivered” to its lot, just the brickwork, electrical and plumbing remained.
Expands outside of the Greater Toronto Area in Canada
Mattamy begins expanding its Canadian presence outside of the Greater Toronto Area. Mattamy enters and continues to operate in three additional markets: Ottawa (2005), Calgary (2006) and Edmonton (2013).
Peter Gilgan Foundation is created
A private foundation created by Mattamy Homes’ founder, Peter Gilgan, provides charitable giving to a variety of causes that include: children, youth & families, climate change and international development. The Foundation’s annual flagship event, Tour de Bleu, was first established in 2005. Tour de Bleu is an annual private cycling fundraiser raising critical funds for notable charities in the Greater Toronto area. Tour de Bleu has contributed millions of dollars to local organizations.
Establishes a Board of Directors
Mattamy establishes a Board of Directors, acting as the highest governing body of the company and providing strategic counsel and diverse insights from a variety of industries and experiences. It was a rare move for a private company at the time, but Peter valued it as a governance best practice.
$40 million donated to SickKids
Peter contributes $40 million towards The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), helping to develop an innovation and research centre, called the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning. Completed September 2013, the Toronto-based, 21-storey building houses 2,000+ scientists, technicians, researchers, educators and administrative staff – all working towards changing children’s lives through health care research.
Mattamy makes its largest land purchase
Mattamy purchases Thomas Ranch for $86 million, the company’s largest land purchase ever. Now developed into Wellen Park located in Southwest Florida, the purchase included 10,000 acres of rural land and has approvals for more than 25,000 homes and three million square feet of commercial development.
Enters the Toronto high-rise market
Mattamy makes its debut in Toronto’s high-rise and urban market through its purchase of Monarch Corporation, the Canadian division of U.S. homebuilder, Taylor Morrison.
Mattamy builds its first net-zero homes
As part of a national pilot funded by National Resource Canada, Mattamy builds its first net-zero homes in Calgary, Alberta. Designed to produce as much energy as it consumes on an annual basis, these net-zero homes include special features such as high-performance windows, solar panels, advanced heat pumps and a domestic hot water tank.
Calgary’s Rotary/Mattamy Greenway opens
Mattamy contributes $5 million to support the development of a 145-km paved trail, connecting 55 communities and almost 1,000-km of existing pathways encircling the City of Calgary. The pathway system touches many of Mattamy’s own communities. The Rotary/Mattamy Greenway holds its grand opening on September 2, 2017.
Celebration Island Village: New community near Walt Disney World® Resort
The master-planned community of Celebration is located near the Walt Disney World® Resort, close to Orlando, Florida, and was originally developed by The Celebration Company, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. Mattamy is developing Celebration Island Village, the southern-most parcel within Celebration and the last of the land within the highly successful master planned community of Celebration. Island Village will feature more than 1,000 homes. On September 25, 2017, it was announced that Mattamy Homes would be developing the next phase of Celebration.
Smart thermostats become a standard in all Mattamy homes
Mattamy announces a multi-year partnership with ecobee, providing all new Mattamy homes across North America with smart thermostats and supporting smart technology. As one of the first homebuilders to make this a standard, this move positioned the organization to become a leading builder of sustainable homes and communities, helping our homeowners reduce their annual heating and cooling costs through advanced occupancy sensing technology.
Breaks ground on first active adult community
Mattamy's significant master-planned community Rivertown, located in Jacksonville, Florida, features spectacular amenities and a variety of homes and communities for all ages and stages of life. This includes Mattamy’s first 55+ community, WaterSong. Designed around an active adult lifestyle, the community offers villas and single-family homes in addition to expansive amenities including a clubhouse, event lawn, fitness centre, game courts, lake pavilion and dog park.
Largest donation to SickKids
Peter Gilgan makes the largest single gift to the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) ever, donating $100 million to the Toronto-based children’s hospital. Together with donations made to other hospitals and health-care organizations to date, this makes Peter Gilgan and the Peter Gilgan Foundation the largest benefactor to health care in Canada.
100,000 homes
Mattamy celebrates the closing of its 100,000th home since the company’s inception in 1978. “My dream has always been to create places where families can experience the best life has to offer by thoughtfully planning homes and communities that suit the way they really live. Renewed focus on urban development in Greater Toronto Area
Mattamy announces a new dedicated urban development team as part of an ambitious initiative to expand and enhance its multi-family mid- and high-rise offering in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Focused on expanding Mattamy's urban footprint while implementing innovative community design, the team has added an impressive tally of more than 1,500 sales, 1,200 occupancies and 4,300 new units to its portfolio within its first two years of operating.
10th home donated to U.S. veterans
Mattamy’s Raleigh team has a long history with Operation: Coming Home, a non-profit organization that donates new homes to wounded combat veterans and their families. In 2021, Mattamy’s Raleigh team donated its 10th home through its long-standing Operation: Coming Home partnership.
Closes first GeoExchange home in net-zero ready community
Mattamy closes on the company’s first low-rise home heated and cooled by geoexchange technology. The home is in the company’s first net-zero ready community, Springwater, located in Markham, Ontario. As a result of this milestone, Mattamy qualifies as a Net-Zero Builder under the Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA) Net-Zero Home Labelling Program.
