Listening Creates Better Communities 

Some of the best ideas come from the people who already call a community home.

 In Calgary's Cityscape community, a young resident asked for a basketball court. A permanent court was already planned, but it was still several years away. Rather than asking residents to wait, our team found another solution. An underused section of the sales centre parking lot became a temporary basketball court, complete with a hoop, lighting, and painted court lines. 

What started as one resident's idea quickly became a gathering place for the neighbourhood. It was a simple request. But it reflected something important. Great communities are not shaped by planning alone. They are shaped by listening, learning, and responding to the people who live there. 

For us, listening is part of building.

 

Caring for What Makes a Place Special 

Every place has a story before we arrive. Natural spaces. Wildlife. Local character. The land itself. These things help make a community what it is. 

That's why we look for opportunities to build thoughtfully, blending the needs of future homeowners with the responsibility to care for the environment around them.  

At Hearthstone in Sherwood Park, that meant carefully designing a bridge crossing to help support an important wildlife corridor. 

At Wildflower Ridge in Kitchener, it meant transforming contaminated and underused land into new opportunity. 

At Summerside South in Ottawa, it meant creating an amphibian habitat and finding new uses for existing resources. 

These efforts may not be the most visible parts of a community. But they reflect something important about how we build. We believe great places should add to what makes an area special, not take away from it. Because building responsibly means thinking beyond what is being built today. 

It means caring about what remains tomorrow.
